For efficient operation of EIMS, the hard drive controller must support asynchronous I/O. The SCSI controller in Macintosh II series and earlier computers, the SE/30, Classic II, Color Classic, LC, LCII, and LCIII does not support asynchronous I/O. The IDE/ATA controller in the earlier Macintosh computers with IDE/ATA hard drives does not support asynchronous I/O. While EIMS will run on computers that don't have asynchronous I/O, operations that involve large amounts of disk I/O, such as processing mailing lists, may tie up the whole computer preventing users from logging in or sending mail while the operation is in progress.
In general SCSI hard drives offer better performance than IDE/ATA hard drives. To get the best performance out of your Macintosh, and for high end servers with large numbers of users or large volumes of mail, a high performance SCSI hard drive is recommended.
